.
Over the last few years, pioneering Australian electronic producer, Andy Rantzen, has worked his way through a series of albums exploring completely new terrain. These albums have featured lo-fi musical backdrops produced for his own spoken word deliveries. As the series has progressed, that musical backdrop has become more and more minimalist. The largely electronic backing of early parts of the series such as Let Them All In have gradually made way, during The factory Of Unhappiness, Liberty, Worthless Offerings etc) to biting acoustic backing (still compiled electronically, Rantzen being an avowed non-instrumentalist) with the occasional foray into dark, muted electronics. The Mandate Of Heaven was primarily sourced from sounds played on a broken lap harp. Lyrically, the short spoken word pieces continue to explore the themes of mysticism and existentialism unabated, the lyrical and musical components reinforcing each other constantly.

Rantzen has stated that The Mandate Of Heaven is to be the final album in the loose series of spoken word releases he has created over the last 5 or 6 years (though how many artists have made such claims only to go back on their word?!!). The album is, therefore, the culmination of significant section of Rantzen's diverse back-catalogue which stretches all the way back to his pioneering mid-80s work with Pelican Daughters.
